The spring of 2006 was the first year for our fly in camp and it was a huge success. We had 14 hunters in camp that took 16 bears and of the 16 bears taken 5 were over 18 inch and 2 of them 5 were over 20 inch. That’s a very impressive 31 percent pope and young bears. 25 percent of the bears taken were color phase bears.
For 2007 we are expanding the area up the Richardson River so many more huge record book bears will come from this camp. We had a lot of our 2006 hunters rebook for 2007 and because we only take 16 hunters per year into this camp we are filling up fast. Don’t miss this opportunity to hunt this phenomenal area, call now to book your spot for the upcoming spring.
Our fly in bear camp is located 150 kms north of Fort McMurray and is our most remote bear camp. All of the hunting in this camp is done with four wheel drive ATV’s and is just like our river boat camp, once you land on the airstrip, everything is taken care.
Our Fly in camp is a tent camp because of its remote location but don’t let this fool you, the tent camp is very comfortable with wood stoves for heat & drying clothes, wood floors, comfy cots, a shower with an actual hot water tank and pressure pump and electricity for lights, appliances, chargers and whatever else you might need to power up. We use only outfitters tents that are anywhere from 12x14 foot all the way up to 16x20 foot with 6 foot walls and a 8-10 foot peak so you certainly won’t be running out of space in them. You don’t have to worry about being jammed into a pup tent with us. Cecilia, our mom and cook for the fly in camp has set herself up a great cook tent with propane stoves, fridges and all the stuff she needs to cook you the great meals you would expect in hunting camp. You will go home very well fed.
There is plenty of room out in front of the camp for shooting your rifles and bows and we have 3d and Styrofoam targets for shooting your bows into. All of our bait sites are hunted out of tree stands or in the case of the tricky bears ground blinds may be used if the guide and hunter decide to go that route. Our tree stands are custom built and there is lots of room in them so you stay comfortable and safe, and in most there are 2 seats and room for a camera man if you happen to have one with you. Our stands are set up so that bow hunters will have no more than a thirty yard shot at a bear that is at the bait site, most are around 20 to 30 yards. We also have some self climbing tree stands and ladder stands. The bears in this area are huge, and just like in the past, many Pope & Young animals will come out of this camp. This area also boasts a good number of color phase bears right from blonde to cinnamon to black with white blazes. This camp is so remote that the chance of seeing another hunter besides the guys in your camp is slim to none. Baiting is also allowed in this area and we use cookies and pork as the main dish, with beaver and vanilla to help draw them in.
The guides will look after all the skinning and preparation of your animal once harvested and will make sure it is ready for the taxidermy shop whether you choose to leave it with us to get done, or if you choose to take it home and have your own taxidermist work on it.
The cost for the tags and hunt is the same for this camp as it is for our river boat camp except the hunter is responsible for the cost of the 150 km plane trip into camp. This cost is $300. Garrett Bros will have a room booked for you at the Nomad in for the day you arrive and the day you leave. We will pick you up from the airstrip once you land and you will be hunting that night, after a good meal and some target practice.
River boat bear hunt
Our River boat camp on the Clearwater River was a great success this year as well, we took 38 bears with 26 hunters. Of the 38 bears taken 9 are over 18 inch and 4 of the 9 were over 20 inch. We have just acquired more new boats and ATV’s for the spring of 2007 and with the addition of a few baits on top of the river ridge this upcoming spring is looking great for more massive record book bears.
Our River boat camp is located 60 kms (40 miles) up the Clearwater river. It includes transportation from your hotel (the Nomad Inn) in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, to our river boats on the Clearwater river. Once aboard the riverboat, we will be on our way to the Clearwater river lodge. (Very remote location.). Once arrived at the lodge you will be greeted with a meal and extreme hospitality.
All meals, guiding and accommodations are included from the time you leave the town, by the Garretts. That afternoon you will be hunting out of one of our tree stands over a well-established bait site. We use river boats, duck boats and aluminum fishing boats to get to and from the bait sites.
Once you have harvested your trophy we will bring your bear back to the main lodge for some pictures and story telling. Our guides and on staff taxidermist will begin caping the bears and would be more than willing to take care of all your needs in making sure you get a beautiful mount or rug done on your Black Bears.
Basically all being said, once you get one the boat or plane Garrett Bros will
take care of everything which is the way it should be so you can enjoy your
hunt to the fullest without any worries. We have never had anyone go home
without seeing multiple bears and every year bears are taken in the 7 foot 400
pound range. There is a reason so many hunters rebook with us, we have great
guides, we have great cooks, we know how to treat people, we run only the best
equipment and we know how to find bears. Click on the reference page to read
stories, references and talk to the guys that hunted with us in 2006 and you
will be very confident that you have booked with the right outfitter.
